Achieve TRUE Financial Freedom Series

In my previous blog post, What Financial Freedom is NOT, we looked at some of the myths and misconceptions that surround the topic of Financial Freedom. Your concept of time is quite important on your journey to attaining Financial Freedom, as well as after you have achieved Financial Freedom.

Working Towards Financial Freedom

Your path towards Financial Freedom will most likely involve your time, dedication, resilience and patience. The great news is that achieving Financial Freedom, by my estimation, has never been easier to achieve than it is in this day due to the Third Industrial Revolution and as I believe that this will as strengthen even more so as the Fourth Industrial Revolution progresses. Even so, you will need to sacrifice time to work towards your Financial Freedom. This forgoing of your time will be until you achieve your goal though, and once this goal has been attained you won’t have to put in the hours anymore.

Your Job & Time

What happens if you don’t chase Financial Freedom? I read a quote by Ellen Goodman a couple of yours ago that I will never forget. She says:

“Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for – in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.”

The largest thief of your time, by far is your job. Not trying to break free from your job, or the matrix as a whole, will cost you dearly in: time.

In the world of employment, the line between standard time and overtime has become increasingly blurred over the years. The idea of 9 to 5 has become a lot more of a colloquial term than a literal one. You are expected to work far beyond these parameters on a daily basis now, especially if you are a graduate or professional.

How Much Time Does Your Job Cost You?

Let’s look at how much time your job costs you:

  • Suppose you work a literal 9 to 5; this would be eight hours a day.
  • Let’s say your commute to work takes you an hour; another two hours a day.
  • How long does it take you to get up, get clean and get ready for work? Let’s presume one hour.
  • Supposing you listen to your doctor and sleep for eight hours a day, so that you can be rested, for work

That is 19 of your 24 precious hours spent, directly and indirectly, on your job. Don’t get me wrong, we all have to have a job at some point of our lives, but do you really have to do it for 35 years (assuming you work from age 25 to 60)? Over the years, that is a great many hours that you would have sacrificed for your job.

Surely there must be a better way.

Financial Freedom & Time

To achieve Financial Freedom, you need to achieve it at a time where you can really still enjoy it and put it to good use. If you achieve it at a stage in your life where you cannot enjoy it to the full, you are not financially free so much as retired.

If you always dreamed of getting fit and climbing Kilimanjaro, learning to play the piano or drums, learning to snowboard, ride a horse, scuba dive, flyboard, fly a plane or whatever, age 60 may not be the best age to learn or experience many of these. Financial Freedom is not only about finances, but also time, opportunity and ability.

Use any extra time that you may have now to create means for you to break away from the system

How can I do this, you may ask?

Have no fear. My entire blog, Deploying Your Money, seeks to help you to achieve this. It may be one path for me, and a totally different path for you. We must all be true to ourselves and chart our paths accordingly.

I have been a financial advisor for nearly six years and have looked into the finances of nearly 500 individuals and families during that time. I confidently believe that, if you are reading this, you can achieve financial freedom well before your retirement age.

About Me

Personal Finance & Entrepreneurship

Mechanical Engineer,
turned Financial Advisor,
turned Personal Finance Blogger.

I learned early on in my career that it doesn’t matter how much money you make if you don’t know how to spend it and make it work for you.

Reading about personal finance, business and entrepreneurship became my passion. I knew that if I wanted to be successful, I would need to learn how to sell.

I quit my engineering to become a Financial Advisor, earning on commission only, to learn about money.

Here, I share what I have learned with you.
